VECTOR POINT CRANIAL THERAPY IS BEST FOR:

Ÿ  Headache, neck pain, low back pain

Ÿ  Extremities pain and injuries

Ÿ  Whiplash and sciatica

Ÿ  TMJ problems (best to re-align head & jaw after a dental visit)

Ÿ  New born babies and pregnant women

Ÿ  People afraid of traditional chiropractic adjustments (“cracking of the spine”)

Ÿ   Osteoporotic and fragile patients

Ÿ   Organically-related issues

Vector Point Cranial Therapy

                                      As above, so below”

                                               -- Hermes

Vector Point Cranial Therapy is a low force and non-invasive method of cranial adjustment.

Vector Point Cranial Therapy operates on the premise that most of the subluxations (misalignments) in the body are secondary to a primary subluxation.  Primary subluxations are located in either the cranium or the pelvis.  All other subluxations are compensatory and may be located throughout the spine or the jaw.  Once the primary subluxation is corrected, any secondary subluxation will correct on its own.

The cranium and the pelvis are connected via the dura mater.  The dura is a tough, fibrous sheet that encases the brain and the spinal cord, and within it, flows the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).   Its attachments begin inside the skull (contiguous along the sutures), then works its way down the spinal canal, and finally anchoring at the lowest bone in the spine, the sacrum.  The free flowing of the CSF is maintained in part by the subtle movements of the cranial bones, a process called the Cranial Sacral Respiratory Mechanism.

When the cranial bones or the pelvis are subluxated, dural tension is created.  When dural tension is created, the uppermost neck vertebrae (C1) and the jaw joints (TMJ) react.  When the uppermost vertebrae react, the rest of the body, including soft tissues (muscles, tendons, organs, etc.), adapt.   Now you can understand that from one subluxation, an entire pattern of compensation and adaptation takes place within the body.

HOW IS VECTOR POINT CRANIAL THERAPY APPLIED?

Vector is defined as a “force applied towards a specific direction”.   As the name implies, Vector Point Cranial Therapy involves the gentle application of sustained directed pressure on specific combination of points along the sutures of the skull.  This process gently repositions the cranial bones to their proper places, thereby releasing the dural tension and correcting the secondary distortions in the body.

The patient is asked to breathe and pump the feet simultaneously.  Inhaling and pumping the feet upward stretches the dura.  Exhaling and pumping the feet downward relaxes the dura.   This process assists in the Cranial Sacral Respiratory Mechanism.

HISTORY OF CRANIOPATHY

Light fingers, soft touch, slow movement, warm hands,

                                Eternal patience with difficult problems,

Remember you are changing 80% of man’s nervous system,

We hope for the better.”

                                                         -- M.B. DeJarnette, 1970 Cranial Manual

There are various systems of cranial bone manipulation, the majority of which are philosophically based on Dr. William Garner Sutherland’s osteopathic cranial adjusting which began in the 1920’s.

Dr. Major Bertrand (“the Major”) DeJarnette, D.O., D.C., studied under Sutherland and established the Sacro-Occipital Technique (SOT) as a standard course of chiropractic care.  Craniopathy is said to deal with the 80% of the nervous system that a strictly spinal approach may be missing.

Dr. David Denton, D.C. studied under and expanded upon the work of DeJarnette.  He later developed a system called the Vector Point Cranial Therapy.

ANATOMY AND BIOMECHANICS OF THE BODY relating to the application of Vector Point Cranial Therapy

The cranium is composed of 8 cranial bones which are joined together along the sutures (just like the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle).  The cranial sutures allow the subtle movement in the skull which has a direct impact on the way the body is able to function.

The movement throughout the cranial sutures is thought to be inherent, rhythmic and spontaneous, and have a direct influence on dural tissue and cerebrospinal fluid movement.

The dura mater is a tough fibrous sheet covering the brain and the spinal cord.  It is attached inside the skull and in the sacrum.   Within the dura, flows the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) which nourishes the brain and the spinal cord.  CSF movement relies on the subtle movement of the cranial bones, an important process called the Cranial Sacral Respiratory Mechanism.

The pelvis is composed of 3 bones:  the right and left ilium, and the sacrum.  The junctions between the ilium and the sacrum are called the sacro-iliac joints (SI joints).  The SI joints are subjected to a lot of pressures and distortions due to locomotion and weight bearing forces.

The spinal column or the back bone is composed of 24 vertebrae (7 cervical, 12 thoracic, 5 lumbar).  The spinal cord, which is an extension of the brain, is housed inside the column.  The nerve roots extend out from the cord and exit the column through the intervertebral foramen (IVF).  The roots branch out to become peripheral nerves, which then innervate every single fiber of your body.

To complete the structure, we have the upper and lower extremities, muscles, tendons, and ligaments.  Do not forget the internal organs, sensory organs, and the hormonal glands.  All of our body messages are transmitted to and from the brain via chemicals called the neurotransmitters.  All of these function under the proper regulation of the nervous system.  Proper regulation of the nervous system, in turn, depends on the proper realignment of the body.

Important survival and instinctual mechanisms such as emotions, extra-sensory perceptions, and intuition, are also processed by the brain.  So, now you see the role of cranial adjustments, and you understand how important Vector Point Cranial Therapy is in maintaining your health and well-being.
